This book club at The Jenks , in partnership with the Winchester Public Library, brings a sociological and anthropological lens to the discussion of books. This month, we will discuss The Woman Warrior: Memoirs of a Girlhood Among Ghosts by Maxine Hong Kingston. This book blends memoir with cultural commentary through the blending of old Chinese folktales into the narrative. Maxine Hong Kingston recounts growing up in America within a tradition-bound Chinese family where she explores her unique position as a first-generation Chinese-American. The narrative is divided into five interrelated sections, each tackling the complexities of identify, womanhood, and cultural heritage from varying perspectives. This book discussion is a combined event with the Sociological Book Club and the Between Two Worlds Public Libraries Program , which brings Yiddish literature in translation to libraries nationwide, encouraging connections and sparking cross-cultural dialogue in their communities.
