Join us for a special cinematic experience! We will take you back to the time when superstition, folklore, and a belief in talismans were integrated into the daily lives of the Yiddish-speaking population of eastern Europe. Come to the screening of this 1937 classic movie that tells the story of a young bride who is possessed by a dybbuk - the spirit of her dead husband’s dislocated soul. This movie is based on the Yiddish play, The Dybbuk by S. Ansky (pseudonym of Shloyme Zaynvl Rapoport, 1863-1920). The Dybbuk is arguably the most iconic play of the entire canon of Jewish dramatic literature. S. Ansky was a Russian-Jewish ethnographer and playwright and The Dybbuk played a seminal role in shaping modern Yiddish and Hebrew theater. In Yiddish with English subtitles. Popcorn will be served!
