Just in time for "Family History Month, professional genealogy researcher Michael Brophy will visit the Whitman Public Library to cover the basics of how to start searching ones ancestry. The topics covered include, f irst, why do we study our forefathers and what makes it so compelling? Several reasons will be explored with some audience participation encouraged. Basic methodology will be explained along with the first steps to beginning research. A few tips towards organizing a large genealogical project will be given. Record sources such as vital records (birth, marriage, death) will be explored along with census, passenger lists, naturalizations, and cemeteries. Examples will be given with an emphasis on noteworthy individuals. Recent advances in the field such as DNA and the internet with popular websites will be discussed briefly. The resources of the Church of Latter Day Saints (the Mormons) will be explained. Brophy is a nationally known, professional genealogical researcher, heir search specialist and lecturer, located in nearby Abington.
