Ipswich River Wildlife Sanctuary — 87 Perkins Row, Topsfield, MA

Watch the Ipswich River's banks ignite with autumn color from the best possible vantage point: the water. On this family canoe trip, you'll paddle through a spectacular corridor of fall foliage, with fiery maples and golden marsh grasses reflecting off the river as you glide downstream. Midway through, the group stops at Perkins Island for a picnic lunch before returning to the canoe landing. The Ipswich River was once listed among the most endangered rivers in the country; an afternoon on it shows exactly why it's worth protecting. Your instructor will cover canoe safety and basic paddle strokes before launch, making this a welcoming trip for families new to paddling and river veterans alike Meet in front of the Visitor Center, where the group will gather before walking approximately half a mile to the canoe landing. Bring a bag lunch for the island picnic, a water bottle, and weather-appropriate clothing. Sturdy footwear suitable for muddy trails is required. All canoe equipment is provided.
