A Nature Year at Wellfleet Bay

Saturday, January 23, 2027 · 10:00 AM

Wellfleet Bay Wildlife Sanctuary — 291 Us-6, South Wellfleet, MA

Spend a year getting to know the Outer Cape through every season. Once a month, you'll meet a Mass Audubon naturalist at Wellfleet Bay to dig into a single subject: mammal tracking in January, winter tree identification in February, and courting woodcocks in March. From there the year continues through amphibian migration, spring bird migration, beach nesting birds, fireflies, butterflies, southbound shorebirds, fall color, waterfowl, and owls. Returning to the same salt marsh, pine woods, and shoreline through all twelve months provides the opportunity to notice what changes and what holds steady. A year from now you'll read this landscape with new eyes and understand why coastal land like this is worth protecting. Most meetings run 10:00 AM to noon. Three meet later in the day: the March woodcock outing, 5:45 to 7:45 PM, the July firefly outing, 7:00 to 9:00 PM, and the December owl outing, 3:00 to 5:00 PM. Every session includes time outdoors on sanctuary trails in all weather. More details on what to bring and expect will be emailed to you ahead of the program.
