For many film buffs and historians, 1939 was a dazzling year for Hollywood with the release of revered classics such as Gone with the Wind, The Wizard of Oz , Stagecoach , and Dark Victory . And Frank Capra's Mr. Smith Goes to Washington has its rightful spot in that list. James Stewart shines in an Oscar-nominated performance as 'Jefferson Smith,' an idealistic small-town Everyman who is invited to be a junior Senator as, unbeknownst to him, part of a political manipulation game. Once he becomes aware of "being had," he fights for truth, justice, and American ideals through Hollywood's most famous depiction of a filibuster. In addition to a screening of the film, Frank Mandosa will offer background context and behind-the-scenes information about the production. A high school English and Film Studies teacher, Frank Mandosa has been a public film speaker since 2012 both in person and virtually around the country. He is host of the podcast Reels of Cinema, as well as co-host of both Movies across the Pod and Hollywood's Hidden Cost, which explores Hollywood's controversies, scandals, true crime, and unsolved mysteries.
