Join a weekly Mahjong Meetup with participants of all skill levels. The only requirement is that players have a desire to learn the American Mahjong game. The group that forms can learn together by watching each other play. If you have a set bring it, but it is not required. There are also Mahjong sets available to borrow through our catalogue of the Library of Things . Learn how to play here . What is Mahjong (or Mah Jong)? Mahjong originated in China in the 19th century and is a tile-based game of skill, strategy, and luck. It's played with 144 tiles and is usually played by four people, sometimes three. The game is similar to rummy, and is popular in East and Southeast Asia, as well as in Western countries. The American version is slightly different as it requires matching tiles to a highly specific, yearly-published hand card, uses eight wild Jokers, and features an initial tile-swapping phase called: The Charleston.
