For our next Reel Talk documentary and discussion, we are excited to present Memories Flow Beneath It (2025) in celebration of the end of Quabbin Days 2026 , a week-long celebration of everything that makes the Quabbin Region extraordinary—its rich history, breathtaking landscapes, and vibrant communities! This film traces the displacement of people and the loss of a way of life in the Swift River Valley of western Massachusetts, when the Quabbin Reservoir flooded four towns in order to create water infrastructure for 52 Boston metropolitan communities, including Quincy. Learn about the expanding water system and its connection to the Irish famine, the Italian immigrant stonemasons, the Great Boston Fire of 1872, State House debates, Supreme Court decisions, and incredible civil engineering innovations - all culminating in the traumatic destruction of four towns for the “the greater good.” The cold processes of eminent domain and eviction caused lifelong trauma, especially for the elderly residents of the Swift River Valley.
