Join Dr. James Buickerood for a discussion of The Republic by Plato. Copies of the book will be available at the first meeting (you are not expected to read it before the first meeting). Plato’s Republic is one of the world’s great philosophical and literary masterpieces, perhaps easy to read but certainly hard to understand. It opens as an exploration of the nature of justice and injustice and their effects on the just and unjust person. Because they think that identifying a person's virtue is so difficult, Socrates and his companions create an imaginary city as a thought experiment, to see if the nature of justice can be more clearly grasped writ large. In doing this, they discuss the nature of the soul, happiness, knowledge and the nature of reality through the ten books of the text.
