Join the First Congregational Church in partnership with the Morrill Memorial Library for the autumn session of our Anti-Racism Book Club on Tuesday, October 20 starting at 7:00pm in the Simoni Room. For this session, we are discussing I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings by Maya Angelou. This book club-style conversation will focus on Maya Angelou's 1969 autobiography, I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings . The book, which describes Angelou's experiences in childhood, is considered a modern American classic. Angelou and her brother, Bailey, were sent by their mother to live with their devout, self-sufficient grandmother in a small Southern town. There, the siblings endure the ache of abandonment and the prejudice of the local "powhitetrash." At eight years old and back with her mother in St. Louis, Maya is attacked by a man many times her age—and has to live with the consequences for a lifetime. Years later, in San Francisco, Maya learns that self-love, the kindness of others, her strong spirit, and the ideas of great authors will allow her to be free instead of imprisoned.
