Joppa Flats Education Center — 1 Plum Island Tpke, Newburyport, MA
Some winter birds are hard to tell apart even when you get a good look. This workshop takes on the pairs that trip up birders every season. Start indoors with photographs, diagrams, and range maps, working through Red-throated and Common Loons, Horned and Eared Grebes, Greater and Lesser Scaup, Pine Siskin and American Goldfinch, and more. Break for lunch, then head into the field to put the strategies to work on real birds in real conditions. Come away with a set of field marks and habits you can rely on for the rest of the winter. The program runs in two parts, a classroom session at Joppa Flats Education Center followed by a field session outdoors, with a lunch break in between. Expect to walk trails with moderate terrain changes at a slow pace, for a mile or more. More details on meeting location, what to bring, and what to expect will be emailed to you ahead of the program.
