Head straight from Joppa Flats north to Hampton and Rye, New Hampshire. There, coves and salt marshes make for prime shorebird territory during fall migration. Keep an eye out for sandpipers and plovers busily feeding in these coastal shallows before moving toward wintering grounds in Central and South America. From there, head inland and upward to Mount Agamenticus in York, Maine, a 700-foot monadnock and one of the premier hawk-watching sites in southern Maine. There, we'll look for migrating Osprey, Bald Eagle, Red-shouldered Hawk, Merlin, and Perigrine Falcon. An expert naturalist guides you through the entire day, covering shorebirds, raptors, and songbirds as the migration unfolds around you. Meet at Joppa Flats Education Center, 1 Plum Island Turnpike, Newburyport for van transportation. Bring lunch, water, binoculars, and a field guide to birds. Wear clothing and footwear appropriate for the weather and potentially muddy trails. Expect to walk trails with moderate terrain changes at a slow pace, for a mile or more.
