North River Wildlife Sanctuary — 2000 Main St., Marshfield, MA

Every colorful leaf, falling seed, and strange fungus in the fall forest is telling a story—if you know where to look. On this small-group homeschool program, young naturalists head outside with their caregiver and a Mass Audubon educator to investigate the season's most dramatic transformations: what makes leaves change color, where seeds go after they fall, and how the forest floor shifts as animals begin preparing for colder months. Guided outdoor investigation and a trail walk at North River bring these changes to life in real time, with small group sizes that allow for close observation and plenty of questions. Curiosity is the only prerequisite. Meet in the Nature Center. Bring sturdy footwear for up to 1.5 miles of uneven terrain.
