Pleasant Valley Wildlife Sanctuary — 472 W Mountain Rd., Lenox, MA
Early February is courtship season for the wild cats and dogs of the Berkshires, and they leave plenty of evidence behind. Search the fields and forests of Pleasant Valley for the tracks, scat, and scent marks of Bobcats, Gray Foxes, Red Foxes, and Eastern Coyotes. Your naturalist will introduce the techniques that reveal how these long-legged, elusive animals move and hunt, geared to anyone already familiar with the basics of tracking. You will also learn what these four species need to survive and why protecting large blocks of Berkshire forest matters so much to them. Come away able to read signs of animals that many rarely see in person. This program covers up to a mile of trail, with terrain that is level or gradually sloping. The surface may be uneven or slippery from snow, mud, or ice. You may travel short distances off trail, which could mean walking through deep snow depending on conditions. More details on what to bring and expect will be emailed to you ahead of the program.
