Pleasant Valley Wildlife Sanctuary — 472 W Mountain Rd., Lenox, MA
Looking closely and drawing what you see is one of the best ways to appreciate what you might otherwise walk right past. This three-month series covers the best of winter, when bare branches, fresh tracks, and low light make the landscape easy to read. You will practice drawing what you see alongside a friendly community of adults, with a naturalist guiding and interpreting the winter phenomena you are recording. Each session begins with an introduction to some techniques or materials before heading out for nature journaling on the trails. The focus of this practice is on close observation and the process of recording what you see rather than making art, so no prior drawing experience is needed. The outdoor pace is slow, with frequent stops and long stationary periods, suitable for a wide range of physical abilities. Trail surfaces may be uneven or slippery from snow, mud, or ice at this time of year. Sessions are rescheduled only when weather will severely affect roads in Lenox; in other inclement weather, part or all of the program moves indoors. More details on what to bring and expect will be emailed to you ahead of the program.
