Hawley Bog — E Hawley Rd., Hawley, MA
At 1,800 feet above sea level, Hawley Bog feels more like the bogs of northern Canada than western Massachusetts. You'll see spectacular foliage and fall colors of sphagnum moss, blueberries, and huckleberries around this glacial relic wetland ecosystem. We will focus on fascinating plants uniquely adapted for life in an acidic, low nutrient environment. Learn about bog ecology, and why these peatlands sequester more carbon than most other habitats, making their protection an important part of the climate response. The walk takes place on a narrow boardwalk that lets you explore up close while protecting this fragile ecosystem. From Greenfield or Route 91, take Route 2 West past Shelburne Falls (approximately 15 miles). Take a left onto Route 8A South and go over the bridge. Take a left onto Hawley Road, then an immediate right onto East Hawley Road. Drive uphill for approximately 4 miles until you reach the bog entrance trail on your right, roughly across from Forget Road and a red house. Please wear sturdy shoes. Restrooms are not available on site. This is a short walk on a narrow boardwalk.
