Arcadia Wildlife Sanctuary — 127 Combs Rd., Easthampton, MA
Once endangered, the Bald Eagle is thriving again across much of the country, and Arcadia has been home to nesting pairs since 2010. Winter is an excellent time to catch a glimpse of eagles here. Alongside the resident birds, eagles from the north move south to feed in the open water of the Connecticut River. Start indoors with a presentation on eagle natural history, the restoration effort that brought the species back to Massachusetts, and protection efforts still taking place today. Then head out on a hike to the Arcadia meadows to look for eagles and other winter birds in the trees along the shores of the Connecticut River oxbow. The first part of the program is indoors. The second half is a walk of about 2.5 to 3 miles on even ground, which may be snow covered or icy. More details on what to bring and expect will be emailed to you ahead of the program.
