Winter Birding at Great Meadows

Great Meadows NWR, Concord Unit — Monsen Rd., Concord, MA

Winter is a surprisingly active time of year as migratory waterfowl settle down in Massachusetts for the season. Explore the expansive wetlands of Great Meadows National Wildlife Refuge in Concord with a naturalist to look for migratory and resident ducks like Wood Ducks, Northern Shovelers, and Blue-winged Teal in their vibrant breeding plumage, as well as Snow Buntings, Golden-crowned Kinglets, and more arboreal species as they begin their courtship rituals. Learn what adaptations let birds hold their body heat through frigid weather and how migration patterns shift as the season turns. Getting familiar with migration patterns is a crucial step towards supporting biodiversity in every season. This program meets at Great Meadows National Wildlife Refuge in Concord. Because this is a National Wildlife Refuge, there is a $2 parking fee payable at the kiosks in the lot, so please arrive 5 to 10 minutes early to pay before the program starts. Expect to walk about 1.5 miles on flat terrain, where trails may be muddy or icy and can have roots, rocks, or puddles. More details on what to bring and expect will be emailed to you ahead of the program.
