Come with a walking story of your own — you’ll be asked for it. Initially, Jay Vogt will read from A Walking Life: A Memoir in Seventeen Walks, including “Sunday Morning Walk,” a six-mile loop that leaves his Hubbard Street door and passes the bells of First Parish, the Old Manse, the Old North Bridge, and on into the Estabrook Woods where Thoreau sauntered. Other readings range farther — a candlelit march past the White House at fourteen, five hundred miles of the Camino, an alpine pass climbed beside his grown daughter. Attendees will also learn how Europeans take “walking holidays” on thousands of miles of public footpaths, and how anyone in the room could do the same. Then, drawing on forty years as a professional facilitator, Jay will invite attendees to reflect on what walking has meant in their own lives, and draw those stories out into the room. Expect to hear from your neighbors as much as from the author. The program closes with an invitation to take The Walking Life Challenge — ask a friend for a walk, and trade the stories your own walking lives have given you. Jay Vogt has been walking his whole life — down wooded trails near Baltimore as a boy, across English moors…
