“Sweet land, we sing to thee….” Mirrored reflections on the mystic chords of memory As we look back on the 250 years since the founding of our nation, we hold a mirror of hopes cast and yet to be realized, all generated by a spirit of intensity, invention, and re-invention. To mark our nation’s semiquincentennial, faculty pianist and Dean Emeritus Wayman Chin presents a program of pieces that reflect the American psyche, including works by Aaron Copland, Samuel Barber and Leonard Bernstein; Beethoven’s Seven Variations on “God Save the King,” (to whose melody Samuel Francis Smith penned new lyrics we know as “My Country, ’tis of thee”) and contemporary composers Jeremy Van Buskirk and Nico Muhly, whose “Refine” for solo piano is a short variation on “America the Beautiful.” Longy’s performance are free and open to the public, but please register in advance.
