The woodwind quintet has a reputation for good manners. This program ruins it. Valerie Coleman, Paquito D’Rivera, and Oscar Navarro hand five well-behaved instruments Cuban dance rhythms, Roma-inflected fire, and writing with the sweep of a film score. Catherine Weinfield-Zell builds her faculty debut entirely from living composers, most of them working well outside the tradition the woodwind quintet was invented to serve. The form has been quietly changing for years. This is what it sounds like now. Expected on the program: Coleman’s Tzigane , Navarro’s Juego de Ladrones , and D’Rivera’s Aires Tropicales .
