One of the pivotal moments in our music lifetimes came when Miles Davis traded in his tailored Italian suits for mod psychedelic threads, and re-engineered his music with grooves from Sly Stone and James Brown and guitars from Jimi Hendrix. Created with a parade of genius collaborators, In a Silent Way, Bitches Brew, Jack Johnson, Live/Evil, On the Corner and other albums wrote new playbooks for jazz improvisers. Out of that matrix emerged multiple lineages, but nobody ever did it quite like Miles and company. The eight members of Listen to This revive, refresh and inhabit this music fearlessly. Led by Morphine’s founding drummer Jerome Deupree, LTT features Ornette Coleman keyboardist Dave Bryant, Either/Orchestra leader Russ Gershon on woodwinds and organ, Bim Skala Bim percussionist Rick Barry, trumpeter Bryan Murphy, bassist Rick McLaughlin, guitarist J. Johnson, and Todd Brunel in the essential and mysterious bass clarinet role.
