Alison Hyder paints because she needs color in her life. She loves the way that a scene changes with the addition of a splash of red, or the juxtaposition of two unrelated hues. It reminds her that nothing in life is truly static. Everything is subject to interpretation, based on our situation and experiences. Once a creation (of any kind) leaves the artist, it is free to be personal to anyone, just the way we can see different things in cloud formations. Alison has taken numerous workshops, including at the Star Island (NH) Arts retreat (StarArts.org), Provincetown Art Association Museum, Castle Hill, and Twenty Summers, as well as spent numerous hours in life drawing (which became life painting) and plein air landscape work. She also enjoys pet portraiture. She feels lucky to have had some great mentors, such as Maryland artist Jim Adkins, NY teacher and artist Lotus Do, and Karen North Wells here on the Cape. Alison tries to paint like her favorite Impressionist artists and the many great Cape Cod artists she loves – but it always winds up being an Alison Hyder. She guesses that’s a good thing.
