For our September meeting we will be reading Beneath a Scarlet Sky , by Mark Sullivan. Based on the true story of Pino Lella, an Italian teenager from Milan, it is an epic tale of courage and resilience during WWII. As the war begins, Pino Lella is sent to a mountain home for boys, where his parents hope to keep him safe. It is there he secretly begins to help the Allied war effort, until his parents, fearing he will be drafted when he turns 18, have him enlist in the German army. Their hope is that by enlisting, he'll be given a safe position and not sent to the Front. Pino becomes the chauffer to a German general, and though thought to be a traitor by many, he has taken on the secret role of an Allied spy. Enduring the horrors of the war and the Nazi occupation, by fighting in secret, Pino finds courage through his love for Anna, a woman he met before the war.
