Read to a Dog with Officer Mel and Bolo

Tuesday, October 6, 2026 · 4:00 PM – 5:00 PM

1st Floor Meeting Room — 7 Mudge Way, Bedford, MA

Readers in 1st - 3rd grade are invited to Read to a Dog. Officer Mel and Bolo of the Bedford Police Department are visiting the library every Tuesday in October so children can practice their reading. Priority will be given to students who have not had a chance to read to Bolo before repeat readers are accepted. Why read to a dog? One of the great things about dogs is that they do not judge! Dogs are not going to correct a child’s mistakes when they mispronounce a word. Children will take risks while reading, boosting their confidence in the process and fostering a love of reading. Studies have also shown a physiological benefit for children when they read to dogs. Interacting with a therapy dog can lower a child's heart rate and blood pressure, as well as reduce anxiety.
