Join Krishna Mallick, Professor Emerita at Salem State University, as she discusses her book Environmental Movements of India , as well as environmental activism and sustainability. Can nonviolent protests save a planet in crisis? In Environmental Movements of India , you will learn about the riveting true stories of poor citizens’ protest to save their livelihoods with the help of their leader/founder. This book takes you to the inside of these three iconic grassroots movements: Chipko, led by Sunderlal Bahuguna and Chandi Prasad Bhatt, protested by hugging the trees; Narmada Bachao Andolan, led by Medha Patkar, by performing hunger strike to protest against the building of giant dams in Narmada river: and Navdanya, led by Vandana Shiva, by launching seed satyagraha (bij satyagraha) a peaceful protest against multinational corporations promoting GMOs. As one book reviewer said, “This book depicts how the voices of the poor and impoverished rekindle the flames of environmental justice, intergenerational equality and respect for nature.” This is a book for any general audience interested in environmental studies, environmental activism and sustainability.
