Math Circle @ Acton Library is a discovery-based program where students learn mathematics by playing games — not by watching a teacher solve problems. Rather than being taught formulas or techniques, students explore mathematical puzzles in small groups of three, gradually uncovering the underlying principles on their own. Each one-hour session focuses on a single challenge — drawn from combinatorics, game theory, and number patterns — that is simple to state but rich enough to generate genuine mathematical thinking. Students are not told whether their conjectures are right or wrong; instead, they are guided by questions. This reflects the core philosophy of the math circle tradition: questions matter more than answers. The program is designed for motivated students in grades 3–8 who enjoy puzzles and want to experience mathematics as a creative, exploratory discipline — not a set of rules to memorize. No prior mathematical background is required beyond curiosity. There will need to be a minimum of 4 registrants at each session in order for the session to take place.
